How to streamline your orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning
Show notes
Too much data doesn’t automatically lead to better decisions. In many cases, it creates noise that slows you down and clouds clinical judgment. A more focused approach helps you filter what truly matters and regain clarity in diagnosis and planning.
Simple frameworks can replace complexity without compromising quality. The result is more confidence, better outcomes, and a noticeably calmer workflow.
Book your strategy call here and we will discuss how you can quickly and simply get more out of your practice.
You can find my books, courses, merchandise and laboratory shop here. I look forward to your visit.

00:00:00: Hello, everyone.
00:00:00: Let's talk about one of the biggest challenges we face as orthodontists today and that is the sheer volume data we are expected to handle!
00:00:07: We spend so much time collecting countless measurements but you have ask yourself does all this information really help us make better decisions or just slowing down?
00:00:16: Here is a statement I truly believe in.
00:00:18: Orthodontist are drowning.
00:00:20: My name is Dr.
00:00:21: Martin Baxman, and what I want to do today is show you how we can cut through all that unnecessary noise in our diagnostic process—how You see, when we have too much data it often becomes what I call a blind grenade.
00:00:34: It's this explosion of irrelevant details that just distracts us from the real clinical problem we need to solve.
00:00:39: Imagine that complex TMJ patient who comes in with a file two inches thick?
00:00:43: Now Of course We Have To Listen With Empathy But our job as clinicians As leaders is to have The discipline to filter through That noise and pinpoint.
00:00:52: So how do we actually do that?
00:00:54: Well, it all starts with having the right tools.
00:00:56: And I'm talking about tools that are designed for clarity and speed not adding more complexity!
00:01:00: Let's walk through a few systems you can put into practice right away.
00:01:03: First up is five second model analysis.
00:01:06: Now i know sounds almost too simple to work but its incredibly powerful.
00:01:09: In literally just seconds You get solid assessment of symmetry crowding and basic spatial relationships.
00:01:14: Ask one simple decisive question Do have enough space or teeth worth should be?
00:01:19: That quick check immediately points you toward the heart of treatment plan.
00:01:22: Next are what I call the Baxman Keys.
00:01:24: Think about these as a few non-negotiable rules that give you stable, predictable results.
00:01:29: They act like super simple checklist at every single appointment.
00:01:32: You don't need to track forty different measurements To know if your on track.
00:01:35: or just ask Are canines in class one?
00:01:37: Is midline centered and are mullers in a stable relationship?
00:01:40: If answer is yes then you're heading right.
00:01:43: It's about replacing complexity with absolute clarity.
00:01:46: Okay, now let's apply these same lean principles to one of the most data heavy things we do.
00:01:50: Suphalometric analysis!
00:01:51: We can absolutely get maximum insight for minimum data here.
00:01:54: I am sure this feels familiar it too many of you i remember back in school learning these analyses that felt like they had ten thousand values would memorize all these angles and planes.
00:02:03: but lets be honest never used again.
00:02:05: reason we forget them isn't because were bad doctors its because most stuff is clinically irrelevant probably eighty percent our cases And that is precisely why I developed a lean-SEF analysis, which uses only ten values.
00:02:17: That's it!
00:02:18: Just ten.
00:02:18: and i'm telling you with these ten values You can get everything you truly need to make a clear strategic decision Now.
00:02:24: These Ten Values are so powerful because they cover four absolutely critical areas.
00:02:28: They tell us about the skeletal relationship between the jaws The incisor position & any associated risks The vertical dimension & of course the patient's remaining growth potential.
00:02:36: With this focused data set we got an entire strategic picture without the usual headache.
00:02:41: So once we have a lean diagnosis, it only makes sense that we need a lean plan right?
00:02:44: This philosophy has to extend directly into how we make strategic decisions especially for those common cases that can often feel really complex.
00:02:51: Let's take a look at how this works for class two malocclusions using something I call the A-B CD system.
00:02:56: instead of getting paralyzed by dozens of different options We just categorize them in four clear pathways A is for functional orthopedics Using the patient zone growth.
00:03:03: B Is for fixed appliances like the Herbst C would be your extraction cases and D is for surgery In those significant skeletal discrepancies.
00:03:10: This framework just eliminates that paralysis of choice and lets you plan quickly end with confidence.
00:03:14: So whether we're talking about the five second analysis, the ten value CEPH or the ABCD system all these tools they are pointing toward one single unifying goal And That Goal is clarity.
00:03:25: The whole point here to reduce complexity so as clinicians can act with confidence and efficiency And this really gets to the heart of philosophy.
00:03:35: This is not about cutting corners, it's NOT about compromising patient care in any way!
00:03:39: It is about CUTTING OUT THE CONFUSION so we can focus our expertise right where it matters most… and when you achieve that kind of clarity...the impact is….well..it's
00:03:47: profound!!
00:03:48: It means you can treat more patients more effectively – it leads to better, more stable clinical outcomes–and maybe most important for us- it dramatically reduces professional stress & burnout both for YOU AND YOUR
00:03:59: TEAM!!!
00:04:00: That's absolutely vital for the long-term growth of your practice and for your own well being.
00:04:04: So I'll leave you with this question to think about, what is the biggest source of noise in your practice?
00:04:09: Because identifying it as very first step toward creating a more efficient, focused and ultimately successful clinical environment.
00:04:17: Thank You For Your Time!
