00:00:15: or is this where ego quietly replaces efficiency.

00:00:19: My name is Dr Martin Buxman and welcome to The Lean Orthodontics podcast!

00:00:25: Today's episode is a short but important reflection on social media and orthodontics.

00:00:36: And, in contrast I observe almost every single day.

00:00:40: Lean Orthodontic vs what i like to call Ego-Orthodontix.

00:00:45: Many of us begin the morning by scrolling through Instagram Facebook or other platforms... ...and suddenly valuable minutes are gone.

00:00:55: But that alone Is not The Real Issue.

00:00:59: What truly surprises me is the type of orthodontic content that is rewarded with attention, likes and admiration.

00:01:07: Lean Orthodontics stands for efficiency clarity and reproducibility.

00:01:13: It focuses on doing what is necessary And consciously leaving out everything That Is Not.

00:01:20: Treatments are transparent sustainable and based On solid diagnosis combined With well understood mechanics.

00:01:28: yet on social media, we frequently see the opposite approach being celebrated.

00:01:34: Extremely complex constructions multiple loop arches mini-implants combined with sectional wires and elaborate mechanics are presented as proof of control sophistication and expertise.

00:01:48: The irony is that many of these constructions are used to solve problems, That could be managed far more simply and reliably.

00:01:56: There's a widespread belief More mechanics automatically mean more control.

00:02:01: In reality the opposite often true.

00:02:04: Complexity does not reduce variability.

00:02:07: It increases it.

00:02:09: When we bend highly complicated arch wires Or design intricate mechanical systems We may achieve result once But reproducing that same result again, let alone teaching it to someone else is extraordinarily difficult.

00:02:24: This is what we describe as intra-rater and inter-rator variability.

00:02:29: even when the same clinician repeats the same procedure The outcome is never identical.

00:02:35: When different clinicians try to copy what they saw online... ...the variability increases even further.

00:02:41: We are already familiar with this problem from diagnostics.

00:02:45: If several orthodontists trace the same cephalometric landmark, the results will differ.

00:02:52: Even if one orthod dentist traces the same landmark multiple times... ...the measurements won't be identical!

00:02:59: This alone should make us cautious about blindly copying complex biomechanical constructions from social media posts without fully understanding their limitations.

00:03:10: The same applies to Biomechanics itself.

00:03:13: Perfectly calculated forces precisely drawn centres of resistance, and mathematically exact angles may look impressive on paper.

00:03:23: But clinically they remain approximations.

00:03:26: Teeth move in three dimensions... ...and they move over time.

00:03:30: Each tooth has its own dynamic coordinate system influenced by anatomy biology & ongoing treatment changes.

00:03:38: The idea that extreme mathematical precision guarantees perfect clinical outcomes is, quite simply an illusion.

00:03:46: Personally I value elegance simplicity and intelligence.

00:03:51: in music a melody is often powerful because it is immediately understandable.

00:03:58: the same applies to orthodontics.

00:04:00: A simple, well-designed system that works consistently is far more impressive than a spectacular construction.

00:04:29: Understand clearly which patients require which approach, Which tools you genuinely need and how to apply them efficiently and responsibly.

00:04:38: Simplicity does not mean over-simplification.

00:04:42: It means clarity scientific thinking And conscious decision making.

00:04:47: Read beyond headlines Look into methods limitations and biases.

00:04:52: question what you see, especially when it looks too perfect to be true.
