00:00:00: Hello, I'm Dr.

00:00:01: Martin Baxman.

00:00:01: today we're going to talk about something that can truly make or break a practice and That's the critical difference between productive refinement And well paralyzing perfectionism.

00:00:09: We're gonna look at how shifting your focus from these huge massive overhauls To small incremental improvements Can unlock sustainable growth really boosts?

00:00:17: Your team's morale and of course improve patient outcomes.

00:00:20: so let's dive in.

00:00:21: So here's our game plan for this discussion.

00:00:23: First, we're going to talk about something called the perfectionism trap and I'm sure many of us have fallen into it.

00:00:29: then will shift gears to a mindset of refinement And see how celebrating small wins is just so powerful For your team.

00:00:35: after that We'll actually quantify this by looking at compounding efficiency?

00:00:43: Alright, first up.

00:00:44: Let's tackle a challenge that I know is familiar to every single ambitious practice owner out there.

00:00:48: It's the pitfall That comes from our best intentions and i call it The perfectionism trap.

00:00:53: you know?

00:00:53: It really Is the silent killer of progress.

00:00:56: You Know feeling right we've all been There.

00:00:58: you leave A great seminar absolutely buzzing with energy.

00:01:01: you come back To the office on Monday morning ready to revolutionize everything overnight.

00:01:04: you want to change Every single system rewrite every protocol All at once.

00:01:08: now that ambition is fantastic but more often than not it Leads us straight into a wall.

00:01:12: And this slide, This really gets right to the heart of it.

00:01:15: On one hand you have productive ambition which drives action and growth but on the other You have perfectionism Which makes you second-guess an overthink every little detail?

00:01:24: Things like how do sort old brackets stock or whether some tiny change needs a whole new policy written for It.

00:01:29: all of a sudden your focus shifts from making progress To avoiding any at all risk.

00:01:35: So let's just call it what is.

00:01:36: Perfectionism isn't really about having high standards, It's a very sophisticated and clever form of procrastination.

00:01:42: When you spend all your time trying to design the perfect plan that avoids every single possible problem You never actually start!

00:01:50: A barrier keeps you stuck at starting line.

00:01:53: Okay so if perfectionism is trap What's way out?

00:01:56: Well its not tactic Its fundamental shift in mindset.

00:01:59: We need explore path to real sustainable change Adopting a mindset of refinement.

00:02:04: And here is the core idea, The goal isn't to reach some flawless finished static state.

00:02:09: True excellence especially in a modern practice Is a dynamic process.

00:02:13: It's an ongoing journey of making small positive continuous improvements.

00:02:16: it's all about getting just A little bit better every single day.

00:02:19: Let's make this real.

00:02:20: with a practical example.

00:02:21: Say your current bonding time as ninety minutes and Your big goal is fifteen minutes.

00:02:24: Well aiming for that fifteen minute standard by next week is Just a recipe For failure!

00:02:28: The gap is way too big.

00:02:29: You're team gonna feel defeated before they even begin.

00:02:31: But what if you aim for eighty five minutes This week?

00:02:33: than maybe eighty the next.

00:02:34: These are manageable baby steps that create a sustainable habit of improvement, and will actually get you to that big goal.

00:02:39: now this whole incremental approach.

00:02:41: it does something else Something really powerful That goes way beyond just process improvement.

00:02:45: It directly fuels your team's motivation because You're creating A culture Of small consistent wins.

00:02:51: This is where you Actually transform The psychology of Your practice.

00:02:54: Think about Every five minute.

00:02:55: Improvement Is a milestone absolutely worth celebrating.

00:02:59: These small wins provide those crucial emotional rewards that keep a team engaged and prevent them from burning out, you could try highlighting this progress with the story of The Day in your morning huddles.

00:03:08: it just builds this incredible positive momentum and shows Your Team That Their Efforts Really Do Matter.

00:03:13: It reinforces the progress not perfection is what we're all aiming for.

00:03:16: Okay now let's put some numbers to This!

00:03:18: Its really easy To dismiss these small refinements as well trivial but their cumulative effect Is Absolutely Dramatic.

00:03:24: Let's actually look at how saving mere seconds can create minutes of productive time, cut down on stress and just improve the flow your entire day.

00:03:31: Let's consider a scenario – an assistant takes just thirty extra seconds per patient to change in archwire!

00:03:37: It sounds like absolutely nothing doesn't it?

00:03:40: Just a minor hiccup and otherwise busy schedule….

00:03:42: but what is that real impact over this course of a busy afternoon?

00:03:45: The cost?

00:03:46: It's twenty-five minutes... yeah If you see fifty patients in a day, that tiny little thirty second delay adds up to nearly half an hour of unnecessary overtime.

00:03:54: And that's not just time!

00:03:55: That is twenty-five minutes of added stress... ...of team friction and lost efficiency.

00:03:59: all from the delay seemed too small even notice.

00:04:03: Now look what happens when we apply just a bit refinement.

00:04:06: by focusing on improving one single step only fifteen seconds maybe as simple as reorganizing a single drawer.

00:04:12: You cut wasted over time in half.

00:04:14: This right here is compounding power.

00:04:16: incremental change.

00:04:17: Small, focused improvements yield massive returns both in your efficiency and in your team's morale.

00:04:23: And this brings us to our final —and maybe most important— piece of the puzzle.

00:04:27: Adopting this mindset isn't just some clinical or administrative tactic.

00:04:30: it is a core leadership philosophy one that transforms you role from being micromanager into true strategist.

00:04:36: Don't think for second that this principle refinement is limited to chair-side procedures.

00:04:40: No!

00:04:41: It applies everything.

00:04:43: How you handle insurance claims, how You manage patient cooperation?

00:04:45: How your approved digital setups creates this continuous flow of improvement that Your entire team can get behind without feeling completely overwhelmed by another big initiative Which leads to a crucial point for you, as a leader.

00:04:57: You have to trust your team.

00:04:59: Delegate these micro refinements seriously.

00:05:01: if you find yourself spending way too much time negotiating A few degrees of rotation on a digital setup let an expert On Your Team handle it.

00:05:07: this empowers them and even more importantly It frees you up to focus on the high-level clinical oversight And the strategic leadership that only you can provide.

00:05:14: we've covered a lot of ground But you know?

00:05:16: It all comes down to taking That first small step.

00:05:18: so I'll leave you with This question To think about what is The one Small incremental refinement your practice can identify and implement this week to start the journey of continuous improvement.
